Rainbow Snippets 07/23

 

Hi guys.  I’ve had a rather busy week and it is only set to get busier.  This will be my last post until mid August because it is summer holidays here in the UK.  We will be mostly off-grid, camping in forests with intermittent internet access at best.  It’s great for the kids to be away from their tech.

I thought I’d share another snippet from Eagle Man and Mister Hawk which I have just finished revising.

Since everyone seemed to enjoy Ethan’s rather unconventional choice of outfit for a stroll in the hills last week, I thought maybe you would like another glimpse of those rather distinctive camouflage underpants.  This time it is from Ethan’s POV.  He has just had a slight mishap whilst handling one of the more exotic animals in his care.  He has some cuts and bruises and a sprained ankle.  Alex is helping, whilst expressing his dismay at the apparent danger Ethan faces every day.

“I’m not changing my job, Alex. Don’t ever ask me to do that.” The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them, but if I had a penny for every time someone has made that unreasonable demand because they thought they could.

Alex gives me a startled look, as if it’s the last thing he would ever ask.

“I would never…” He shakes his head, as if he wants to say more, but now is not the right time. “You need to get that ankle elevated with some ice on it,” he muses, changing the subject completely, or avoiding it. Can’t say I blame him. I think I shocked myself. “I’ll help you into your living room,” he continues. “You’ll be more comfortable there, and then you can tell me where I can find you some clothes.”

I look down at myself as he helps me stand, only now remembering I am only wearing those camouflage briefs he likes. His eyes have wandered down there too.

“How many pairs of those do you actually have?”

“They came in a pack of three.” I flicker my eyebrows at him. “So there’s another pair in my room, just waiting to be worn.”

“Oh my!”
