Rainbow Snippets 06/11

Rainbow cake

Hi there fellow Snippeteers and other equally awesome humanoids.

Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (no spoilers please!).

My snippet, this week, comes on the back of one of the many food events we seem to have throughout the summer near where I live.

This weekend it is the turn of the annual food festival that takes place, conveniently, right at the bottom of our street.  We can smell the food from our house.  Needless to say, we do not cook when this is on, we simply hop from food stall to food stall, tasting all the freebies and eating anything from Spicy (blow your head off) Mexican and South African street food to Japanese curries.  There’s also a lot of cheeses, and I mean a LOT of cheeses.

So food.  That seems to be an emerging theme.  Here is a snippet from my WIP, Genie, involving a breakfast. It’s in there somewhere anyway between the books about genies and our heroes’ embarrassment at being caught in the act (almost).

“Mother!” Jayce gasped as he scrambled to get into a less compromising position. “Haven’t you ever heard of knocking?”

Lady Catherine regarded her son over the top of a pair of half spectacles, rolled her eyes and turned to the group of healers and servants gathered behind her at the door. “Put those books over there by the window please, and set the breakfast on the table.” She ordered before turning back to face Jayce and Tobrin. “This is a medical ward, Jayce, not a private bedroom.  I’d have thought it would be obvious what was appropriate behaviour here, or perhaps you need me to point it out to you?”

“No, thank you.” Jayce scowled.  She was being a little unfair, since it was she who had been adamant he should stay as close to Tobrin as possible.

Still snuggled beneath the covers, and up against Jayce’s side, Tobrin sniggered.

“I don’t know why you’re laughing.  She means you as well.” Jayce told him, his tone gruff.

Enjoy.  For more awesome snippets click here to find out what others have shared this week.

Have a good weekend.

    • I have currently eaten myself into a food coma, and there is more tomorrow.
Yes, Jayce’s mother does have a point, but I think she has reacted rather well, considering what was going on moments before she entered the room.
